Finding an optician

There are two types of optician:

  • Optometrists (also called ophthalmic opticians) carry out eye tests, look for signs of eye disease which may need specialist treatment, and prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses.
  • Dispensing opticians fit and sell glasses but do not test eyes. They will give you advice on types of lens, and help you to choose frames.

You can find local opticians on NHS Choices.

If you cannot get to an optician, there are a number who will visit you at home. There is a list in the Documents section of this page.
