How we're performing

Each Board meeting receives a report setting out our current performance against national and local targets.

Improving health

We have also set ourselves eight local targets that will be used to judge how effectively the services we commission improve people’s health. These are:

to reduce

  • teenage pregnancy rates
  • childhood obesity
  • hospital admissions for alcohol-related harm
  • delayed transfers of care
  • MRSA infection rates

and increase

  • breast screening rates among women aged 53 to 64
  • early detection of hypertension by GP practices
  • the proportion of people able to die at home if they wish

Audit Commission rating

The Audit Commission rated us as performing well in 2007/08. We had improved our performance in three areas and maintained it in the remaining two.

Care Quality Commission ratings

The Care Quality Commission judges us on how well we use the resources available to us and for the quality of health services we buy on behalf of local people.

For 2008/09 we were rated good for our use of resources and good for the quality of services that we commissioned.

We also have to publish details of our performance against Care Quality Commission core standards.

You can read our 2008/09 core standards declaration.

What patients have told us about their care

The 18 Week Patient Experience Survey seeks to establish patient experiences of waiting times and assess whether they perceive that care has been received when needed.

This report presents the findings from the survey:

World Class Commissioning

In December 2008 our progress on commissioning was assessed through a national process.  The results show we have made a good start to our journey to becoming world class commissioners and are in a strong position to improve further.

The report highlights strengths in our approach including:

  • joint working with the City Council
  • local leadership of the health agenda.

We are already working on improvements in weaker areas including stimulating the market and predictive modelling.

Improving our commissioning will help us to ensure delivery of better services that are more closely matched to local needs, improving health and well-being and reducing health inequalities across the community.
