The World Health Organization (WHO) will next week officially endorse the work being carried out in Brighton and Hove to improve people's health. Experts from the WHO have been scrutinising efforts in the city to tackle the so-called 'health divide' which means that life expectancy in some parts of the city is shorter than elsewhere.

Cash boost for city HIV projects
A total of 50,000 is to be distributed to a range of projects in Brighton and Hove aimed at improving the lives of gay men who are HIV positive. Brighton and Hove City Primary Care Trust (PCT) has set aside the cash for gay community groups and networks for projects which in 2004 will reduce HIV infection among gay men, build or strengthen the gay community or improve the health and wellbeing of HIV positive gay men.

Survey will show just how healthy city is
Thousands of residents of Brighton and Hove are this week being asked 'How healthy are you?'. A survey is being sent out to thousands of Brighton and Hove residents asking about their health and lifestyle. Two percent of the 260,000 people living in Brighton and Hove have been randomly selected to take part. The aim of the survey is to help match health services with what people in Brighton and Hove need if they are to stay fit and well.

Kids the focus of No Smoking Day
Parents who smoke and have children with asthma will get advice and help to quit as part of National No Smoking Day in Brighton and Hove (12 March 2003). As well as information on how to give up smoking displayed in GP practices and pharmacies around the city, Brighton and Hove City Primary Care Trust has organised a smoking cessation specialist to speak to parents visiting their children at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Dyke Road in the morning of 12 March.

Patients will no longer have to wait for days or even weeks to see their GP after two city practices adopted radical new appointments systems. From today, 3 March 2003, patients who phone to see a GP or nurse at the Seven Dials Medical Centre in Brighton and the Central Hove Surgery in Hove will be offered an appointment on the same day - whether their case is urgent or not.

NHS patients have a chance to air their views
Patients in Brighton and Hove will shortly get the chance to help improve NHS services in the city by taking part in a major public opinion survey on local healthcare. During March and April, around 850 random patients will be sent a questionnaire asking about their experience of local GPs, dentists, pharmacists and hospitals.

City NHS marks Contraceptive Awareness Week
Forget secret admirers, you may get a Valentines Day card from your local NHS next Friday (14 February). But instead of a message of unrequited love, it will contain a condom and essential advice on contraception and family planning services. The move is part of a range of activity aimed at promoting the use of contraception in the city and reducing rates of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
